Otame paced the dark of Arnlan silently, his mind heavy with thoughts. He was, for the moment, ignorant of his surroundings, simply going where he would. Mortil, old One-Eye, was dead and gone, long ago. His friend had passed into the world the black wolf could not, could never, comprehend. Otame sighed as he continued his aimless journey. He knew not what his destination was; he only knew that it was probably something he would never reach.
Arnlan was quiet as of late. It always was now, now that much of its old support was gone. Pollux was still here, and the alphas too. Nightblood's pups were pups no longer. Nightblood was gone, although Otame heard that the rumours of her death had been exaggerated. Mortil would have liked that, he thought, smiling in spite of himself. But alas, Mortil's death was no myth, no fantasy. It was all too ugly, too real, too slow. But the gray warrior had borne it, and Otame had borne it, and many others had borne it.
That had to mean something.

There was absolutely nothing that was going to separate NightBlood from that fish. The big wolf had scooped it right out of the river; a big catfish, her favorite meal. Despite the sharp little bones, one single bite out of it was heaven on earth from her. Now if it would just stop jumping!
"C'mere you bouncing sack of scales!" she growled as she swung another paw at it, causing it to be flung further into the forest.
At least now she knew it would die soon. All she had to do was wear it out. However, the pain in her trick leg was starting to piss her off. She growled and snarled every time the fish moved further from her. Through bushes and over boulders it went, flipping and flopping this way and that.
"Stop MOVING!
Finally, the fish landed on one of the hunting trails, about a quarter mile from the river. That was one robust fish. NightBlood pounced at it, trapping its head under her right front leg and its tail under her left.
"HA!"
With a shout of triumph, she bit into the side of her meal, oblivious of the black wolf she had stopped in front of.

A stray movement disrupted Otame's thoughts. He turned with a bemused expression at the floundering catfish that came dancing out from the foliage, staring with mild surprise.
"Well...what a surpri-
He didn't particularly finish his sentence as a red and black blur came crashing after the catfish, following its path. Otame took an easy step backwards, avoiding getting blindsided by the pursuing wolf.
"HA!"
The wolf, apparently ignorant of Otame's presence, snatched up the catfish in her jaws, reveling in her triumph. Otame blinked twice before recomposing himself to speak.
"Ah, Nightblood. Allow me to congratulate you on your recovery and return. I'm sure your family is delighted. On that note, also allow me to convey my condolences about your pups that are no longer with us. We lost many...and they are missed."
He took a deep breath. "I am Otame. I have been thinking of you of late, Nightblood. There are things we must discuss regarding your late friend."

"Ah, Nightblood. Allow me to congratulate you on your recovery and return. I'm sure your family is delighted. On that note, also allow me to convey my condolences about your pups that are no longer with us. We lost many...and they are missed."
How poetic. Just as NightBlood was finishing her favorite type of meal, she had her ears bombarded with the reminder of her dead children. Growling audibly, but at little more than a gentle rumble, she sat up at looked coldly at the dark male.
"I am Otame. I have been thinking of you of late, Nightblood. There are things we must discuss regarding your late friend."
"What's to discuss?" the Beta asked darkly, "I feel terrible for being the one whose false death lead to his very real one. I'll be killing NightShade for starting all these tragedies. Unless he left a message for me, I'm not too sure I care to speak of my adoptive brother or my buried children."
Blood returned to her meal and snarled when she bit on a sharp bone that pierced her gums. She spat it out quickly and left the fish for the buzzards. This particular form of accidental self-inflicted pain was recurring all too often, but she wasn't going to stop eating catfish just because she tasted her own blood along with it every once in a while.
