Cool, refreshing air from the sea utterly dripping with salt clashed like two fronts heavy with rain with the sticky and dry air of summer. The water splashed over the shoreline, misting anyone that stood close to it, drenching them in a soft spray. Maelu stood on the shore, her fur clinging to her body as she was soaked. One of her black paws was raised to the green bar like markings, eyes of the same staring out at the horizon. They lacked the usual shine of a young adult, making her gaze seem confused. Maelu only had one question. Where did she belong? She was both wolf and dog, a mutt, so to speak.
The grey and black female sighed, both eyes closing simoultaneously. Her tail hung limp and useless behind her, as her ears leveled with her skull. The female was deep in thought, her eyes reopening as the tide began to come in. She did not move, only the wind rustling through her neutral fur made any noise. It was mid evening, maybe around six or seven o' clock, and Maelu had been in the spot since she had awaken from her sleep the previuos night. Shifting, the female stretched out her very stiff forelimbs first, then her hind hind. She broke her silent stare to look at the sky; however, Maelu found it starless, clouded.
She smiled, a soft laugh. "It seems even the stars leave me" With that, she turned around, walking a ways of the beach before lying on the ground, her eyes closed once more in though. "Where do I belong? I look like a wolf, smell like a wolf, and can even howl like one, but I am dog as well. Why did my mother mate if she knew it would only bring misery to her offspring because of her lupine blood?" Maelu sighed, and then tried to think of an answer.

Eck. Sorry, horrible post. My muse kinda died in the middle of it. The wind swept over Scatterstone and its sandy beaches. To some it brought comfort on this warm evening. To others, it was hollow and empty. It reminded the, of the fact that they were alone and had no one else with them to enjoy the cool breeze with. The only one who probably felt that way was probably John, but how wouldn’t in his situation? That was beside the point though, it seemed as the Canaan Dog trekked across the pale sands of the beach.
“The stars never leave. They’re always there. Watching.”
His voice was as bitter as his eyes as he moved away from the icy water, as he too was drenched and not enjoying it too much. He had once been told that that’s were souls dwell after the passed on. His eyes, growing even more hateful looked with the sky for a few seconds, as if challenging it. After a few seconds, they returned to the earth and looked more sorrowful. Then blank. It wasn’t like him to talk to random dogs, but hell, nothing was normal anymore. His mind returned to the female, his eyes turquoise eyes passively watching her.
She didn’t seem like all the other dogs who wandered around her, but the again, her scent was warped with that of wolf. Few dogs associated with half-breeds, fearing that they were evil, or something like that. Blankly, he watched for her reaction. John would have found it rather amusing if he had scared her, but if she was part wolf, no doubt she would have smelt or heard him coming. Like her, he didn't seem to belong. Not really fitting. Well, at first he had, but now, after the recent events that had happened not far from this location, he had no place.

ooc: It wasn't bad, pretty good actually. Maelu felt the breeze shift through her fur, the scent of someone else dragged to her black nose, as if it was resisting. She was broken out oer her trance like state by the sound of paw steps, and the smell was stronger now that the, taking another sniff, dog was coming closer.
“The stars never leave. They’re always there. Watching.”
She turned around, her green eyes blank and full of sorrowful, self pity, and confusion. Maelu wagged her tail softly, offering a warm greeting. She had known he was watching her, it was obviuos to her, and just as clear as it was to him. For a moment, she stood still, her very wolf-like body examining him, and then, she locked eyes with him. She was alone, and wsa just too afraid to get close to anyone. After her father and brother had betrayed her, Maelu didn't know where she belonged anymore, and so, here she stood with her colbalt green eyes staring into John's.
"If you're wondering, I won't hurt you." Her voice was so sad, and almost soft enough to be mistaken for a whimper. Her tail hung limply behind her, and then, she took a step toward the Caanan dog.

The wolf dog greeted him warmly, something John hadn’t expected, nor did he want. Self-pity, which he too harbored, had recently made him believe that he didn’t deserve any gesture of kindness from anyone. The mutt turned hers eyes towards him and he saw what she felt, which was about the exact same way he was feeling right now, even if he was too “tough” to admit it. John locked gazes with Maelu. His sorrowful aqua eyes staring intensely into her emerald one, but then he averted his gaze. She was a stranger too him, and what he was feeling was no business of hers.
"If you're wondering, I won't hurt you."
John found this rather amusing. Maelu seemed too scared and alone to be threatening in the least. Nevertheless, when she took a step towards him, he had to resist the urge to back up. Instinct told him to trust no one now, after the recently being betrayed by his mate. If it wasn’t for the wolf-dog seeming so miserable, John would have came up with so rude retort.
Fortunately, for her, John knew her pain and instead the dog just smirked at her. “I wasn’t wondering.” There was something in his voice that was mocking, as if she could never be able to hurt anyone.

Maelu and John's locked eyes seemed to hide so much pain, so much sorrow. She tried to contrinue it, but he broke the connection, averting his gaze. The female had known that would eventually happen, but she had gotten something from those aqua eyes. He was just as alone and sad as she was. They were two of a kind, almost as if fate had been calling for them to meet.
“I wasn’t wondering.”
His voice seemed to mock her, telling her she couldn't be strong or threatening. This caused her to avert her own gaze to the sands ground below them. She sighed softly, her ears dropping in her lowly desperation to make friends with someone. She hated to get very close, after all, even the best of friends, or in John's case, mate's could turn in you.
She turned towards him, and then trotted back to her spot, her fur standind on end to keep her warm. She tried to keep from saying anything else to him, her mouth firmly shut, and her eyes locked on the water. Maelu waited on him to move this time, letting him do whatever he wanted. If he came closer, then fine, if he left, that was ok, too. 'If he leaves, I will be alone again'

Maelu seemed deeply and visibly affected by what he had said. John wasn’t trying to discourage her, or seem like a jackass… but that’s what he had done. And now he was slowly being filled with guilt. As if I don’t have enough of that, he thought. She seemed troubled enough without him calling her weak or powerless. The poor girl seemed just as lost as him, even moreso, if that was possible. After all, neither of them had anything left. John had left his mate and children, which was all he had. All the friends that he once knew had been abandoned after the death of his son. So, he felt for Maelu, and knew her pain all too well. He also knew that having someone with you didn't always banish the loneliness and the sorrow. It usually took more than just having someone to feel better. In most cases, you had to communicate, something John had failed to take into account when he was with both of his mates.
Then, the mutt just walked away. He stood there for a few seconds, deciding whether or not to follow her. If he did, she might get annoyed and thing he was some strange stalker. But apologizing to her would be the right thing to do, which usually came above all for this dog. Besides, if he didn’t, he would probably be plagued by the fact that he was such a jerk. So, he did go after her. They ended up at the same spot before, much to the disdain of John, who was trying to escape this place. It wasn't like Scatterstone was a horrible place to live: it was quiet, peaceful, abundant with prey, but too many memories were of this beautiful beach, and the majority of them weren't good. Once again, he refused to look her in the eye as he spoke. Instead he let his eyes wander across the horizon.
“Look, I… I’m sorry.”
It sounded rather awkward and clearly showed his hesitance. He didn’t know her and he was following her around apologizing. That might provoke her. She may not look threatening now, but if he pissed her off that might change. Growing uncomfortable, the Canaan dog took a few steps back away from the sea, annoyed by the fact that he was getting soaked again, but also not wanting to get too close to her. Hopefully this isn’t a mistake.

The female wolf back away as a strong wave surged upwards, utterly soaking her fur the core. Now officially cold and drench, Maelu shook hard, the water disappearing from her coat. It poofed back up somewhat, but still was wet. Looking at the sand doubtly, the female made the decision that rolling in sand would not be a good idea to remove the water. She continued to back away until the spray no longer reached her already wet body. One of her ears twitched in John's direction, making her turn her head to look at him as he spoke.
“Look, I… I’m sorry.”
He couldn't possibly know why she was so sad, but he was apologizing for his tone to her earlier. That, Maelu admired and offered him a sad smile. "Thank you." She shook again, more water flying from her grey and black pelt. Instead of attacking as he thought she might have, she only looked at him with sad, lonely eyes. "It is lonely here. I have no one to be with, and hardly is anyone kind to me." She spoke shyly at first, her voice sounding distant and very alone.
"Relax, I mean you no harm. My name, by the way, is Maelu." Maelu wagged her tail, her green eyes staring harmlessly at the ocean. She was thinking about her family again. The female had no way of knowing that this place would be good for her stay. A place where she could have solitude when she wanted, good food, and lots of shelter. It wasn't all that bad really, but in her eyes, everyone was not be trusted. Maelu hardly even trusted herself at times. Her fears often clouded her judgement, making her chase off potentail friends as well as enemies alike.
The female dog wolf hybrid's black paw touched the green markings under her eye. It was odd for a wild animal to have markings, but nobody knew she came from a ban of humans, though, their smell lingered on her still. It was a painful reminder of what she had been through.

The dog took a few steps back when Maelu decided to shake the water off her pelt. He was cold enough without her getting more saltwater on him. She offered him a sorrowful smile, which told him that it wasn’t just his tone that made her seem depressed. That made him feel a little bit better. He simply nodded at her thank you and then took another step back, to once again avoid getting wet. She then looked up with lonely eyes, which he avoided looking into. Letting someone know how he felt hadn’t worked out the past two times, and John was one who learned from his mistakes.
John didn’t respond to her second comment. He had enough problems of his own; he didn’t need hers too. It might be cruel, but it was the truth. There was no denying it. Helping others with their problems usually only led to trouble.
"Relax, I mean you no harm. My name, by the way, is Maelu."
“Kinda figured that out by now.” He had once again resorted to that mocking tone, but this time it was more playful. A small smirk accompanied his retort. She was wagging her tail. A good sign. What he had said earlier didn’t seem to both her anymore. And then he grunted “John.”
[/b] Unlike Maelu, John usually trusted himself and his decisions. Being self-conscious and constantly doubting yourself wouldn’t get you very far in life. “Those markings,” he said, carefully studying her face, but careful not to look her in the eye, “They were made my humans, weren’t they?” John had seen quite a lot of dogs who were tattooed, and scarred because the humans were so possessive of them. Luckily, John had not belonged to a human, and therefore was completely untouched, although he did have army tags around his neck that he had found long ago. After calmly studying her face, he averted his eyes, slightly embarrassed to be caught staring at her. [/blockquote]

She watched him carefully, one vibrant green eye looking over shoulder at the male, the other seemed locked onto the horizon. When he backed up, she couldn't stop herself, and managed to smile a genuine and true smile. Her pointed ears perked upward, welcoming his words.
“Kinda figured that out by now.”
She smiled again, but this time, it seemed slightly coy. Her true nature was beginning to show, and before Maelu knew it, some of her old self flittered to the surface, despite her attempts to squish it. Maelu seemed a bit more lively, less distant now, though she still looked sad.
“John.”
Ah, a nice name. He was much better than Daemeon, her cruel and heartless brother. Her brother treated her like like most others, but here was a dog that seemed to a little rough, and maybe had been betrayed like she had. Mauybe that was why she felt better, John could relate to her.
“Those markings,” “They were made my humans, weren’t they?”
She caught him studying her, pretty much staring at her. This made her look back at him, cobalt green eyes laughing with a bright livelyness. Maelu chuckled, and then winked at him. It was her way of saying she was all right with being stared at. "Yes" She finally answered him. "Humans are possessive of what they see is their's. Some, like you and myself, need to be free of others." Her words her kind, soft, and motherly.

John gave a little smile, this time one that held actual happiness. He was glad that he could banish some of her sorrows. Helping people may get you into trouble, but it was satisfying to know that what you had done meant something to someone. Sure, you usually didn’t get anything back from it, but it was worth it… most of the time…
"Yes. Humans are possessive of what they see is theirs.”
John nodded knowingly. The majority of humans thought that they could simply take whatever they wanted at call it theirs, living or not. It was infuriating, but what could animals do to stop them. But, there were also some dogs that enjoyed being with humans and having someone to take care of them. And there were some humans who didn’t act like they owned everything around them.
“Some, like you and myself, need to be free of others."
The sound of her voice, so motherly and caring, embarrassed John. It made him feel like he was a pup again. A frown then appeared on his face as he considered her words, rather than her tone. “How would you know?” he snapped, as he finally looked straight at her. Those aqua eyes held anger, but still that same sorrow that hers held. He didn’t mean too, of course. It annoyed him that she acted as if she knew what’s best for him, even if he believed it to be true. Not only that, but she knew what he was feeling, which he was usually tried to hide from everyone, not matter how close they were.

Maelu watched him, turning around to face him, gray and black body moving like a soft feather of a bird in flight, as one. After she has spoken, he nodded his head knowingly. It was comforting to know that there was someone else, someone that understood just how bad humans could be. Maelu had never been beaten by man, but hardly had she been petted or seen as a freind. The only reason she had been marked by her so called master, was so he culd lay permant clain on the female, and breed her one day to a strong male to produce offspring to sell.
When she looked at him again, his eyes were angry, making her freak out for a moment. Maelu could fight sure, but she didn't like to, and that was it, she usually didn't. After all, she had been beaten enough times by those that called her family and friends, teased by her brother, her father, and all their so called friends. It was a shame that the female had been harrassed as a youngster to the point where she refused to fight back, even if she would die if she didn't defend herseld. Maelu was gentle, preferring to just take the beating rather than make anyone else suffer.
How would you know?
A moment later, they locked eyes, her emerald ones looking into his. He was angry at her words, and embarassed as well, but that didn't deny the fact she had spoken the truth. Maelu sighed, shaking her head doubtfully. It was just a matter of speaking the right words, really. The female hybrid thought carefully before opening her mouth this time. He had snapped at her, and that told more than anything else ever would. John would not have been so defensive at it not been true. "First you're eyes, their almost identical to my own. Sadness, loneliness and betrayal. Second, would you have snapped at me if what I spoke wasn't true? Most likely not." Her words her strong, yet she spoke them with a soft voice, so gentle and soft in sound.
The female wagged her tail, trying to make him understand she knew what he was going through, just as she did. Maelu wasn't stupid, she knew that if he became her friend, that would mean trusting someone again, and for that, she would need to open up. She wsan't sure if she was ready to do so, but maybe, just maybe, she had found a freind in this male dog called John. Maelu smiled at the thought of having a friend again.

Like Maelu, John had chosen to leave everything behind. However, his motives were much different. He didn’t abandon his family because he didn’t belong. It was out of spite and anger that he walked away from them. Though he could have stayed when she told him to leave, he didn’t. He was too damn pissed and full of pride to do what was right and stay with his mate who clearly needed him. ’What did it matter, though? She would probably run to find that lover of hers’ he thought angrily to himself, even though he knew that it was a lie. A lie that he wanted to believe so badly. Maelu brought him back to the present when she answered his question.
"First you're eyes, their almost identical to my own. Sadness, loneliness and betrayal.”
Quickly, he dropped his turquoise eyes down to the sand, further embarrassed by her tone. He cursed himself for letting his emotions show through; especially to someone he had just met. He cursed himself again for being so stupid and weak. He had let some random wolf-dog in, who he didn’t know at all. “Second, would you have snapped at me if what I spoke wasn't true? Most likely not."
Now that just pissed the Canaan Dog off. It was the truth, though and through. There was no denying what she was saying, but John was gonna try anyway. Leave it to him to make things all better. “Where the hell do you get off tellin’ me what I need?”
[/color] The first statement was growled out at her, but as he continued, his voice grew in volume. She knew nothing of what he had been through. “You don’t know me! Hell, you just learned my name! So tell me, exactly how is it that you know what I need?!” He didn’t even know what he needed. Well, he did, but refused to acknowledge it. He needed her back, but refused to return and see her. And, the next best thing to that was having someone there, and at this point in time, John wasn’t looking for anyone. [/blockquote]

The conection was broken as both looked down at the sand; however, there was something she was having troulbe understanding. Why did she feel like John needed her help? This puzzled her more than she knew she could be. Shaking her head, and then aqueezing her eyes shut, Maelu made an attempt to move away, but her legs were pretty much frozen to spot where she stood by her urge to help John. Shaking her head again, she relaxed, deciding she was stuck there until she did something or said something that actually made enough sense that it would be useful to her and Maelu. They were so different, but so alike, it was frightening really to see to wolves that not only contradicted one another, but could be compared as well.
When he spoke again, Maelu simply looked at him calmy, her eyes looking directly at him with a knowing gaze. It was strange how relaxed she seemed even though a few feet from here, an angry and rather annoyed male wolf pefectly capable of killing her stood. It had not even occured to her that he would hurt her, but even if he did, if only would serve to confirm what she had already said anyway. After all, he was just trying to contradict the truth. Maelu had to give him credit for at least trying.
“Where the hell do you get off tellin’ me what I need?”“You don’t know me! Hell, you just learned my name! So tell me, exactly how is it that you know what I need?!”
She glared at him, eyes suddenly narrowing as his voice grew with increasing volume. Maelu sighed silently, answering him quickly, but with as much control as a wolf twice her age. "John, calm down. I hardly think it is nessicary for violence. You are right that I don't know you, but I know what it feels like to be beaten and betrayed by someone you love. Its in your eyes." She paused to put a few inches between them before taking a deep breath and continiuing. "When I looked deep into them, I saw hurt, and sorrow, but also a growing need to be with someone again, the one that betrayed you, and before you try to blame me, remember I am half dog and half wolf. Where do you think I belong? Wolves hardly tolerate me, most dogs chase me off. I am just as alone and searching for someone like you"
She was controlling her rising fear of what this dog might do to her if he as given the chance to attack. Maelu shuddered internally, personally hoping she was strong enough to withstand whatever he threw at her. Words of her mother came flooding back. "No dogs can show the world what a wolf can." She hadn't understood then, but now, it made perfect sense. She had an idea of what her purpose was now. Here was a male dog that needed help, and she was willing to help him.
"John, I am only trying to help you" Maelu's voice had changed. It was sharp, and very wolf-like. She seemed to look very wise as a cool breeze rippled through her gray coat, tugging it around her body and making it stand on end.

"John, calm down.” He took a deep breathe, mocking her once again. “I hardly think it is necessary for violence. You are right that I don't know you, but I know what it feels like to be beaten and betrayed by someone you love. It’s in your eyes."
The dog looked up at her, angry, as if trying to disprove what she was saying. It wasn’t very easy when it was the truth. Still, he did his best to summon up all his anger and look directly at her. John’s eyes stared intensely at hers, smoldering. She’d see through it though, since she already seen his pain.
"When I looked deep into them, I saw hurt, and sorrow, but also a growing need to be with someone again, the one that betrayed you, and before you try to blame me, remember I am half dog and half wolf. Where do you think I belong? Wolves hardly tolerate me, most dogs chase me off. I am just as alone and searching for someone like you."
A little taken a back, John dropped into a sitting position with a quiet thump in silence. Like before, his eyes met the soft sand beneath him, anger momentarily subdued. Now agitated, his eyes ran over the sand, as if he could what he wanted to say there. He hated how, after just meeting, she was able to tell what she felt. She knew how much he hurt and about the recent betrayal. She even knew how much he yearned for her. One might think she was heaven-sent… or just the opposite. John wanted it too stop… and he didn’t. Part of him was infuriated because she could read him like a book. That made him feel weak. But, it felt good to have someone that seemed to understand again. It made him feel better to have someone that was like him.
"John, I am only trying to help you."
“What if I don’t want you help? And why the hell do you care? What I do is of no consequence to you, so why are you suddenly so concerned about me?” he growled at her. It wasn’t an angry growl, though. He was trying not to be angry at her, since, secretly, he was glad that someone still cared. No matter how it seemed, John attacking her was highly unlikely… but not out of the realm of possibility. If he did get irritated enough to consider doing something like that, he would most likely leave. Violence wasn’t something he approved of. Maybe that wasn’t why he had fought back against his mate (if she could still be called that) when she attacked him. But that could’ve just been common sense.

The Caanan dog looked up at her, anger running from his eyes like sparks from a fire. She saw they appeared to be smoldering with anger, and for once, something she was unable to make up, unable to see it was happiness behind those blue eyes. After she had spoken, Maelu noticed as he plopped onto his rump with a soft thump, silent and yet, she guessed confused.
The hybrid female watched his eyes, moving across the sand unconsciuosly to where only a few feet seperated them. Maelu stopped. Her eyes fell from where they had been on the sand to the beach that was once rumored to be stones, her green eyes running up and down the coast. He was like a wave as was she.. The waters the same, but each wave different and unique in its own way.
“What if I don’t want you help? And why the hell do you care? What I do is of no consequence to you, so why are you suddenly so concerned about me?”
The female took a few steps back as he growled at her, though she highly doubted John would attack her, she could not narrow out that it was a possibility. Maelu thought over her words carefull before opening her mouth and actually saying them, her eyes looking over his shoulder. "If you do not want my help, then so be it. As to why I care" She seemed to be distances away at that moment. "I never want anyone to suffer as I have done and am doing. You may not be happy with me, as I highly doubt you are. If you really want to know, I hate to see others shunned and hurting, as you so obviuosly are, John" Her voice was soft as she spoke his name. Maelu wagged her tail hopefully to him, asnd stood there looking at the ocean.
