A young wolf paced the halls of a dense woodland, his cocky smile never leaving his face. His eyes were wide and open to all things around him. His ears flicked at times as he strove to catch all sight and sound around him. His beautiful golden coat gleamed in the twilight as he broke into a particularly open clearing. His white paws crunched on some fallen leaves as he stalked the open ground, looking about for any signs of danger. He was no normal wolf. He was heir to the most powerful pack in Kloteck…or so he claimed.
His mother was Alphess of the band of dog-hating wolves that formed the pack of Sallin. His mother was a great, well-known, powerful she-wolf that took no nonsense from anyone. And young Carter was proud of it.
But his father…he was a different story. In fact, Kaine was the worst a wolf could ask for. He never thought of Carter as little more than a nuisance it seemed. And boy, did Carter hate it.
So at the moment, he was going to prove it to him. Prove that he was the rightful heir to the grand throne that waited for him. Er…after he got a snack, of course.
The golden wolf paused at the edge of the plentiful clearing, crouching down when he scented the putrid smell of rabbit. Not much, but the best he could do on his own. He licked his chops, his tail wagging slightly as he padded stealthily through the brush, eyes locked on the grey-brown fluff-ball that sat nibbling grass a few feet away. Carter grinned and leapt, grabbing the prey in his claws before finishing it with a bite to the neck. He almost felt guilty for killing such a thing, but he shook the feeling off with a flick of his tail. He lay down and devoured his kill swiftly, still flicking his gaze up just I case he was caught off guard.
At that moment, he started to wonder what might be up with his sister. Fellen sure had been going out on her own a lot more recently. He wondered if she was going to strike out; make her own pack elsewhere. The thought made him sad; he really cared for his sister. Not as much as Mum, maybe, but he still loved her.
He got up and stretched, leaving the remainder of his meal to other animals. All that was left really was some fur and the bones. He gave the food a last look before walking off, sticking his snout in the air.
It wasn’t long before he caught another scent on the breeze. At first, it worried him; it smelled like another wolf, a wolf he didn’t know. He debated on going back to report the intrusion to his mother when he realized it: It wasn’t wolf…it was dog.
Ugh…the thought of one of those…those THINGS in HIS territory was disgusting. Carter snarled and tore in the direction of the source, sure he’d catch the little annoyance spying or some such thing like that.
The complete opposite. He never thought those filthy dogs capable of being stupid enough to wander in this territory without due warning, but apparently that wasn’t the case. Honestly, how did these abominations exist with such little brains?
Carter stepped out in front of the sighted Pit Bull and raised his tail high. “Get outta here!” He snapped bossily, trying to imitate his mother’s authority.
However, this had little effect. The dog sniffed haughtily, a grin playing on his maw as he set down the little pouch he’d been carrying. “And who are you to tell me what to do?”
A bit taken aback by such casual talk to him, Carter let out a snarl, his hackles rising. “I am heir to the throne of Sallin! Now get out before I make you!”
The Pit Bull laughed. “Sallin? You mean that two-timing bitch and her followers? Like I care…”
Carter was completely speechless. “How dare you talk about Mum that way!” He snapped, advancing slowly.
“Oooh, so sorry…” The dog bit back, sitting and sniffing indignantly. “Who are you anyway? Nightshade’s got a son?”
Carter pouted and took another step forward. “Yeah. I’m Carter, proud son of Nightshade and Kaine! And you are…?” His top lip curled in a growl at the last bit.
“Carter?” His opponent snorted. “That’s a girl’s name!”
“Is not!” Carter stood up, offended.
“Is too!”
“Is not!”
“Is-”
The dog was cut off with a squeal as a dark figure leapt down on him, snuffing out any further protest. After a moment, Kaine whipped around, his gold eyes fiery. The look on his face made Carter back up, more than a little fearful about what sort of painful death awaited him.
“How dare you stoop so low as to speak with these low-lives!” The Alpha of Sallin snapped, wheeling on him. “And you call yourself my son!”
“But I was just-”
“No excuses! Wait ‘till your mother hears about this!” The dark wolf stalked past Carter, headed away from the border and back to the den.
“No…!” Carter ran after him, a begging whine in his voice. “Please don’t tell Mum about this! I didn’t-”
Kaine ignored him and sprinted away, leaving poor Carter to cough up the dust he’d aroused.
His son looked after him pitifully. If Nightshade found out he’d been talking to a dog, even so much as arguing with one instead of killing it on the spot…and with Kaine telling the story, he’d probably make it sound like they’d become friends or something…
“Oh, man…!” Carter whimpered, pacing about restlessly on the spot. “Mum’ll hate me for…huh?”
He turned about, looking at the little pouch that the dog had dropped before. Something was poking out of it…Curious, Carter padded over to investigate.
It was a flat, round…thing. The heir sniffed at it, grabbing the pouch and dragging it away from the pool of blood and body so as not to get the odd object dirty. He grabbed the item and pulled it out, only to notice how sweet it tasted. His curiosity reaching breaking point, Carter gobbled it up. It was the most delicious thing he’d ever had. Soft and sweet, it seemed to have minor crunchy bots on the inside, which made it all the more intriguing, not to mention tasty.
He let out a satisfied hum and started to rip at the pouch, looking for more. By the time he’d cleaned out the supply, he realized that he might never be able to have any more. He snorted softly, disappointed. He was just about to look around for more (maybe they grew on trees…), when a disgusted scoff reached his ears. He turned around and saw Nightshade standing there.
Grinning, Carter started to explain his new discovering. “…You’ll never believe how sweet they are! It’s so…” He stopped, noticing the look in his mother’s emerald eyes.
He’d never seen such a peculiar expression on her face. It was almost outrage, with more than a hint of disgust. And mixed in it all was the very expression that Carter feared most: Disappointment.
“Cookies, Carter? Cookies?” She growled, obviously trying to hide her anger.
Carter didn’t understand. Were cookies those things he just ate? “Er…I don’t…A-am I…in trouble…?”
Nightshade chuckled slightly, her words sounding almost forced. “You have no idea…”
