Upon the small port, the day sluggishly faded to its close, closely followed by the chilly night. The sky was smeared in reds and oranges, a good sign for anyone traveling overseas. Despite the fact that it was summer, the weather was mild, especially around the Rakine and Scatterstone. It was nice, even if that meant the winters were harsh and cold. Ice always coated the cobblestoned roads and frost bit at your lungs and throat with every breath you took. But no matter how low the temperature happened drop, curling up with someone you were close to always made everything seem warmer…
“What the hell am I thinkin'?” The abrupt words where a reaction to the abrupt thought that had wormed its way through his mental defenses. How the hell did that happen, he wondered… Annoyed, John rose to his feet and gave himself a shake, ridding himself of any excess water that happened to remain on his pelt. Even on the high pier he was resting on, the icy spray of the ocean still somehow managed to reach him, much like the thought that had entered his mind.
“Just forget it…” the male dog muttered to himself. “Why are you even thinkin' about it?” Under normal, less stressful circumstances (stressful to him anyway), he wouldn’t have been found talking to himself. This happened to be different though. That happened to be the reason for the monologue. And also the pacing. Back and forth along the edge of the dock, he went, clearly agitated. That wasn’t the only reason, though. He had been lounging here since early morning… watching all the humans and dogs say goodbye to their wives and mates and children... That thought certainly changed his mood. He was still noticeably agitated, but now he seemed to be brooding, whilst he paced the wooden planks, rather than venting. No longer was his attention focused on the closing day. Instead, he thought of more important things…[/blockquote]

She hadn't seen him at all today, she'd really intended to spend some time with her good friend, though she just got distracted a few times. First it had been a stranger in need of help, wish hadn't taken long, or it wouldn't have if they'd stopped thanking her after the sixth time, by then it was hardly worth the effort. The early morning sailors had made it difficult to make her way along the port to search for anyone, and as she decided to take a detour, she remembered the small human cry out in glee. "Pretty puppy" he'd said. Dana couldn't help but allow herself to enjoy the attention. She loved the smaller humans, they weren't as mean and most of them didn't kick or yell if you were too close. She'd nuzzled the little boy happily, at least until his mother, one of the loud, angry large humans came along, swatting and yelling at her.
By then she'd remembered her friend rather specifically, knowing he'd say something along the lines of his general dislike of all humans for they were nearly all the same. Dana knew full well he'd never cared for her particular choice in home, but to her, it was just that, home, too hard to leave it behind.... For the time being at least.
Now, carefully slipping past the humans, mostly escaping to their ships and homes, she growled lightly, growing impatient with them and herself. She knew John was fine without her company, he was a big boy and took care of himself just fine, much better than Dana managed on her own.
"There he is!" The female muttered in relief, cutting off her train of thought as she watched her friend pace, hearing him talk to himself. Raising a brow, Dana slowed her approach and trotted toward John quietly.
"I believe having a conversation with yourself is often considered a bad thing...." She mumbled casually, before grinning brightly.

Still pacing up and down the dock, his thoughts went in circles as argued with himself. The same issue came up every time, and he debated with himself. John actually found it quite annoying that he couldn’t get the issue out of his head. After a while, his pacing stopped and instead the mutt stared out across the sea. It was a beautiful scene, but that wasn’t of any interest to him.
The scent of human was layered thick on his friend, mingled also with her own scent and the scent of the port. He grimaced at her, almost as if blaming her for bringing the disgusting scent near him (despite the fact that he was in a human city). His affection for her got the better of him though, and the scowl faded away. Instead, he trotted towards wearing a smile, tailing wagging. It may have seemed a bit unusual, but she seemed quite happy to see him, and he didn’t want to make her regret coming to see him.
He stood a few feet away from her, and shook his fur again. After pacing along the edge of the dock, the icy spray had soaked him through. “It all depends on who ya ask,” he replied with a smirk as he approached. John’s tail continued to wag as he nuzzled her neck. It was nothing more than a friendly gesture… or at least that’s what he hoped she would think…[/blockquote]

Dana blinked and tilted her head slightly, amused and curious as she noted her friend's odd mood. He seemed so happy... He wasn't necessarily an angry guy... Just not quite so.... What was the word.... Well, simply, he just wasn't as blank and calm as she was so used to seeing him. The difference certainly wasn't a bad thing, but she was wondering as to why the sudden change in attitude.
“It all depends on who ya ask,”
She chuckled lightly at this, only to be even further shocked when he nuzzled her. Her teal eyes closed as she leaned lightly into the gentle action. Shifting back, Dana smiled up to John happily.
"Happy to see me?" She laughed lightly, lowering slightly, sitting down delicately, allowing her tail to settle over her paws. The female sighed, deciding he was just glad she was finally around after being away all day.
"I apologize for not finding you earlier. I got side-tracked..." Trailing off slightly, Dana imagined the little human boy, how he seemed so enamored by her like she was really something special. She liked that feeling. Pretty puppy.
Flickering her gaze back to focus on her friend, Dana flicked her hair slightly, smiling once again. "I assume you kept busy just fine without me though?" She asked, laughing as though she knew the answer already.

His companion seemed to notice that he wasn’t as much of an ass as he usually was. Damn. He’d have to change that. If he started going soft, then he didn’t doubt that she’d somehow try to get him to talk about his feeling. No way in hell, he thought. I ain’t a pansy. Still, he couldn’t afford to be rude to her. She was the only one who really seemed to care for him. Sure, he knew quite a lot of other strays around Rakine, but none of them really gave a damn about him. She did though…
“Always happy to see you,” the dog replied with a smirk. “It gives me something exciting to do with my time. Not much to do here at the port…” That was true. Most of the name he just wandered around and tried to dodge the angry kicks directed at him. Damn people.
"I apologize for not finding you earlier. I got side-tracked..."
“I can tell...” he muttered, obviously referring to her stop to spend time with the humans. Rolling his eyes, he back towards the pier, leaving here there. He didn’t doubt that she would follow him. That’s usually the way it happened. She’d be probably annoyed, but he was willing to endure her wrath… It probably would last that long anyway. She was always kind and forgiving... unlike him...
