[glow=orange,2,300]Dana[/glow] Skillful paws hopped from plank to plank, being careful not to slip through the rotted wood. Movements stopped, as she swayed slightly from the light breeze, and the fact that the small sliver of wood beneath her paws looked as if it were to give out. Oh this'd be a fun little challenge, seeing as the the neck plank was even farther away, with a rather large opening that would send her into the cold water if she missed. A large smirk formed on Dana's lips. When had she ever turned down a challenge? Crouching as low as she could without slipping from the wood, Dana took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment, before drawing them open, a new look of determination in them. With a grunt of effort the Shepard mix sent herself to the next piece of wood with a long leap over the missing planks. Well, of course Dana wasn't as young as she used to be, and well she just sorta lost her footing... Claws scrabbled at the wood, tearing into them. It wasn't really the water that bothered her, not even the fact that it was insanely cold water, but just the fact that she would have failed is what drove her to hold on. "Jeez, I'm really losing my touch..." Dana whispered to herself, as she finally she managed to hoist herself onto the plank, and stand in a proud pose, looking off into the distance with an accomplished expression, secretly hoping no one saw her slip, not that it mattered... Was there really any point to have crossed this old rotting dock? No, not really, but it was something to do, besides Dana had a lot on her mind, especially after that whole thing with John, and the yelling out her feelings, which might have had something to do with it, but she couldn't be sure. But there was a reason why she'd chosen this dock in particular, rather than all the perfectly good docks along Rakine. This was a place Dana knew all too well... A piece of her history, but it held all good memories, no matter how sad such memories would make others, Dana loved to come here, to the very dock where her father would often set sail with his human crew... [about the whole setting and jumping on planks, that was completely random so... dun ask... xD] [/center]

With the sound of nails clicking on cobbled stone, John ran through Rakine Port. Yells from humans and other dogs alike ran out as the Canaan Dog pushed through crowds, often causing them to drop things. Several humans had tried to kick him, while the dogs tried to bite him, but he ignored them. Slipping on the wet stone as he went, John pushed his way to the edge of Rakine, only to turn around and do it all again. The point of this running wasn’t just to piss off the humans and their slave dogs, but to exercise. Ever since that day not too long ago, John had noticed that fact that a simple run and worn him out. A bit sad, considering what his species of dog was bred to do. So, daily, he exercised, running from one border of Rakine to another and back again. It was working, or so he liked to think.
“Damnit,” he growled as one of the humans managed to land a hefty kick on his multi-colored side. The kick made him skid on the paved cobble street, but he managed to keep himself from tumbling into the water as Dana had done. Still ignoring the shouts, he started up once again, despite the anger and confusion it was causing in the various crowds of people and their dogs. John was on his last ‘lap’ of Rakine when he stopped short. Up ahead, on one of those old docks that badly needing repair, was Dana.
Thinking about that awkward day still sent the dog’s mind in a whirl. At first, he wasn’t sure if he should approach her, but she was his closest companion after all. So, still a little unsure, he walked towards the edge of the rotting dock, breathing hard from his running. As he did make his way towards the dog, he witnessed he lose her footing and plunge into the salty water. A small smile appeared on maw as she climbed out of the sea and struck a proud pose.
“Dana,” he said simply as he also began crossing the dock, his silver tags jingling lightly. Unlike her, John checked to make sure each plank that he stepped on would hold his weight. If it didn’t, he would simply jump over it and the next one would. Several times, his paws had slipped through a rotting plank, but he kept going till he was near her. Dana had chosen one of the most rickety docks in Rakine, and John thought he knew why, but wasn’t about to say anything about it.

Having half of your body become soaked by cold water isn't really all that bad, unless there just happens to be a breeze. Mumbling under her breath, she turned hearing her name. A soft smile formed on her maw. Pausing, Dana noticed that little smirk that John held. Damn it... She thought silently, although it was more of a joke then anything.
"John..."
She spoke just as plainly as he had. A grin met her lips as she stepped closer, lowering down a bit, before shaking her entire body. A shower of small drops, of ice cold water went every direction. Letting out a chuckle she winked and turned so that she could strut across her current plank, before she gracefully leaped to the next.
Was she showing off? Sure, you could call it that, but it was more like teasing, just for the hell of it. Besides, Dana could have just stood there silently, building the tension that they already had between them. Okay, sure it was a little out of character for her, but there was just something about this weather, this season... Oddly enough her father had passed away in the winter, but that wouldn't change the fact that she enjoyed this season. Turning around, the Shepard mix, hopped on the plank which she had once stood upon. She paused pulling each paw together, so she could stand in that proud pose again, for no reason at all... Turquoise eyes moved to study John, as she noted his heavy breathing.
"So, whatcha been up to?"
Dana asked wit a grin, as she swayed slightly.

"So, whatcha been up to?"
What had he been up to? Well, nothing really. For the past few days he had been exercising probably more than he should, but he doubted that was of any interest to her. Other than that, he had explored Rakine and its surrounding areas a little more. None of that seemed like the least bit exciting. So, he simply replied, “Not much.” Despite the creaking of the planks, John continued moving forward. So what if he fell in the water? He would only get a little wet… and completely embarrass himself.
After another plank or two, the Canaan Dog finally worked up his courage to ask her about the dock. “So why are we at this dock, anyway?” he asked. With each word that left his maw, he leaped towards a different plank.
Once he had finished crossing to the end of the dock, he sat near the edge of the dock, focusing his attention and turquoise eyes on his Dana and waiting for her answer. But, she didn’t really need to answer the question. The answer was a bit obvious to him. It had something to do with her father, of course. Although, he still inquired, just to start some kind of conversation between them.

"I see..."
The Shepard mix paused, and leaned forward slightly, as to allow herself to look into the blue reflective waters. She looking into her own eyes, remaining silent and still for a moment, before taking in a deep breath, and shifting her weight. Bringing her soft, bright orbs to face her companion, Dana smiled.
"Good question..." She shrugged, and took in another deep breath. "...just sorta thinkin'... 'bout stuff.."
Dana's tone seemed to have become calm and soft, rather then her hyper vocals only a moment ago. She paused, and took one step back, watching her every move carefully, before setting her rump against the creaky wooden planks. Her white, and crimson striped tail flicked back and forth attentively, as she looked up into the sky. Yea there was quite a bit on her mind today. Turquoise eyes closed, as she let her breath out in a heavy sigh.
"Well... I wanted to talk... actually..."
It was best to get it done right? Besides they both knew what had happened, whether either of them mentioned it or not. If they didn't speak of it, the two of them couldn't be completely comfortable together, right? Leaning back, she swayed yet again.
[sorry for teh late post again, I just cleared up some family drama...]

When the shepherd mix leaned over towards the water, John followed, ignoring the creaking of the wooden boards underneath the weight of them both. For a few moments, he lost himself in the waters, staring at his reflection. One of those ‘far-away’ looks was displayed on his canine face as he watched the rhythmic motion of the salt water. When he felt the eyes of this companion upon him, he backed up about a foot or so from the edge.
"Good question... just sorta thinkin'... 'bout stuff...”
Because of the change in her voice, John turned towards Dana and studied her carefully. There was something odd about her today, although he made no mention of it to his cohort. Hopefully there wasn’t anything wrong. She’s was all he had had to hold on to for a long time. If something was wrong, it mind shred him to pieces… "Well... I wanted to talk... actually..."She just wanted to talk. Well, it couldn’t be that bad then could it?
Oh, who in the hell was he kidding? He knew what she wanted to talk about. It was the reason he had made himself scarce as of late. It was the reason that he had a look of certainty on his face. It was also the same reason why he couldn’t ever leave her behind.
“Talk about what?” he asked, shifting into a sitting position. His hesitation about talking of the matter was slightly hinted in his tone.

Dana paused, taking in the soft scents of the cool water that lapped up against the dog, making the creaky planks sway slightly. The wind blew through her orange bags, making her enjoy this even more. Wait a minute... She turned to John as he replied to her statement. The female stood staring at him with a blank expression that seemed to say. 'What the hell is wrong with you?' though in a good way... sorta...
"...don't make me push you in..."
She threatened with a slight grin. Of course he knew what she meant, how could you not? The Shepard yawned, and leaned back slightly, acting as if this was all rather boring, though in all truth, it was nerve wracking, the main reason she was being a little... odd today.
"Must I refresh you memory? There was rain... you... and me... then we said some things, that involved... Oh I don't know... something along the lines of...'love'!"
Okay, maybe she could have put it in a bit.. more mature way, but she liked to watch John squirm, seeing as it didn't happen very often, and she was one of the very few that knew how to do it. Smirking, Dana took a step closer, and rested her behind on the rotten wooden planks. Bright turquoise eyes stared deep into her companions, trying to get him to say anything, and continue to tease him...
[Yea, when Elliot came out, I like fell over all like.. 'OMG, nuuuu']

You god-damned moron! After the look he was given and Dana’s remark of "...Don't make me push you in..." John was cursing at himself. Why in the hell had he just kept his mouth shut? A simple ‘okay’ would’ve been fine, but he had to be an idiot and pretend it had never happened. Damnit! Now what should he say? Think of something, he was yelling at himself. She was probably enjoying this.
Why was it that she seemed perfectly fine discussing this? She was completely calm, unlike him. Had she ever thought she was in love before? It didn’t seem like it. But he had, although his ‘true love’ had left him. Enough of that thinking. But, he still couldn’t think on anything to say. Just don’t say anything at all! He wasn’t sure it would work, it might just anger her. Now panicking, the Canaan Dog kept his mouth shut.
"Must I refresh you memory? There was rain... you... and me... then we said some things, that involved... Oh I don't know... something along the lines of...'love'!"
Keeping his mouth shut would make things worse, but by her smirk, John could tell that she was enjoying pushing his buttons. To try to calm himself down, he took a deep breath. He would probably be fine, just as long as he didn’t say anything. But still nothing came to mind. And now she was staring at him. Does something.
“Ya’, sorry.” It came out as a distracted mutter, as he still had to think of something else to say, and quick.

[ Part 1 // Part 2 // Part 3] Dana paused, and let her gaze fall at hearing John's words. Her turquoise eyes closed, as she sighed, not quite sure how to reply to this. Why would he even appologize... It was true, right? If it was, then what was so wrong about it? Shaking her head, the Shepard seemed to be a little lost within her own mind, almost forgetting where they were... After a moment, she lifted her head, soft orbs opening as well. "John... why are you sorry? Lets be serious here now, I told you the truth, so why are you telling me that your sorry... unless..."The female stopped, and turned away for a moment, as if confusing herself. Her damn jumbled thoughts... Man, this was just getting so hard... back when they were just friends things weren't this weird... But if this was really how they felt, should they move this any farther? Shaking her head again, orange bangs hid her eyes. When did everything change? Now here they were, yet another thing in common.... though at this point it wasn't really a good thing... but she was just so lost now. There was so much to determine about all of this, so if they were in love... then why was it that this was so uncomfortable between them? Shouldn't have been easy if they were meant to be? Dana let out another sigh, her legs shaking slightly, from frustration.

The turquoise gaze of his companion fell and then she turned away. Was something wrong? Oh, hell, what idiotic thing had he said now? "John... why are you sorry? Lets be serious here now, I told you the truth, so why are you telling me that your sorry... unless..."What did he have to be sorry for? Hmm. Let’s see. Could it have been that he had been avoiding her for the last few days, hoping that the she would simply forget the incident during the storm? How about acting like in idiot just a few minutes ago, because he was too much of a coward to talk about his feelings? Maybe it was the fact that he couldn’t look her in the eyes right now because he was scared as a pup? Or, hiding his feelings from both her and himself for so long?
Well, the Canaan Dog wasn’t about to explain all of those things to her. “I’m sorry for acting like an idiot just a few minutes ago.” That was good enough… wasn’t it?
Why wouldn’t things go back to the way they were when they were simply friends? Perhaps, it was a childish thing to think that after this whole time of traveling together and always having the others back that they wouldn’t have any feelings for each other. Calm down, he kept telling himself, you’ll be okay. But would he really be fine? And what about Dana? He turned his blue orbs of eyes towards her. She was shaking. There was something wrong.
“You’re shaking.”

Dana sighed, remaining silent, as she stared down at the wooden planks underneath her paws. Shivering slightly, the Shepard allowed her claws to dig into the rotting wood, as she stood there, just as angry at herself as John was within his own mind. Hearing his last statement, her head lifted slightly, and she looked down, trying to become still.
"Oh... yea... just sorta... off...I guess..."
She spoke attempting to lift her tone, and not allow it to shake as much as she had been. Boy, did they have a lot on their paws here... Either way, Dana didn't regret bringing it up. It was best to face it head on, right? Letting out a sigh, she sat up straight. Her tail still, and curled around her paws, as she lifted her eyes to her companion's face slowly.
"...how are we gonna get through this one?"
The female asked quietly, her tone sounded broken, and tired, very much like the incident a few years back, after her run-in with that human... When no one knew if she was going to pull through or not... Shaking away the memory, the Shepard sighed, and lifted to her paws, and took a slow step forward... It was too bad neither of them could see that this was going to get worse and fast...

"Oh... yea... just sorta... off...I guess..." Nothing was wrong. Good. That meant one less thing to crowd John’s mind. Well, kind of good then. Maybe not at all. He seemed to want distraction. Something to take his mind off the issue at hand (or at paw). Secretly, he hoped that they would let the issues settle, just until he could get his thoughts in order. Unfortunately, he wasn’t granted any time to think.
"...how are we gonna get through this one?"
That was a good question. How, indeed? John didn’t know himself who they could get through it. But he felt compelled to answer her, hoping that it would bring back her normal tone of voice, rather than the seemingly drained one she was using now. “Like we always do. Muddle our way through together, and hope for the best.” It wasn’t the most reassuring answer, but it was an answer and he wasn’t about to sugar-coat it for her.
He stood and leaned over the edge slightly, catching his reflection in the rhythmically motion of the waves. The smell of the salty water was heavy in the air, one of the reasons that John disliked the port. But, Dana still called it her home, so he would stand by her. No matter what came or happened, he would be by her side. He, too, was unaware of what would happen when Dana’s paw met the rotting plank.

[*dull voice* Oh my... what might happen?... xD]
Dana smiled warmly, and turned to face John with her eyes that now seemed to shine with a bit of determination, the look that made you know that she wasn't gonna let go, wasn't going to let down her friend... The one she'd give the world for... She nodded firmly, taking in a deep breath, as another soft breeze blew through her banks, allowing them to swirl around her.
"Yea... I know we can do this... We've got each other."
The Shepard smirked, turning completely to face her companion, she took a step forward. Why did that particular plank have to be the weak one? Why did this one have to have a crack down the middle? Why did this have to happen, right when the tension have begun to ease off of them... Either it was fate, or just bad luck, but within an instant those determine eyes widened, as she heard the snap... With the single rotting plank that had given out under the canine's weight, a few more had followed, and before she knew it, Dana was within the icy waters, trying to stay above the surface...
Even if you grew up with and learned from one of the best sailing dogs in the sea, you can't fight against waves and and chucks of broken wood... It was a blur, her vision blocked by the water and the wood that moved around her. Trying to hold her breath... trying not to go down, she cried out, struggling to even say two words... "...John...please...!"

Dana’s determination seemed renewed as she smiled at him. This, or course, gave John a sliver of hope that they could get through this. Only if they had each other though. Lost in the salty waters, John was surprised by the sounds of the wood snapping. His reaction was swift as he backed off the rotting plank and onto another. Dana, however, was not so fortunate. His mind immediately thought of Dana once he was off that plank.
“Dana!” His voice was loud, desperation clearly echoing in it. There was only once choice if he wanted to save her, and he did. John would have to Go into the swirling waves of icy water. It was suicide, but that didn’t seem to register in the mind of the Canaan Dog. Two words resonated throughout his entire mind: save her. That phrase echoed inside of his mind as he dove into the ocean. He had just enough time to hear Dana say "...John...please...!"
He hit the water hard, although that didn’t bother him. It wasn’t even the cold that concerned John; yes, they did make it hard to move, but he would survive as long as he got out quick. The think that worried the dog were the waves. They kept pushing him from Dana. Away from the only thing that he really valued in this world. Taking that away from him would basically be repeating what had happened before. No, he couldn’t take that feeling of being helpless again, or the feeling of being completely alone
Whether it was his excessive exercising as of late, the adrenaline that was coursing through his veins, or the fear of never seeing Dana again, John managed to make it to make it to the spot where he thought his companion had gone under. Without thinking, he dove under the water. The salty liquid burned his eyes, but he kept them open, searching for her. Oh god, where was she?! He couldn’t find her!
John was forced to come up for another breath. “DANA!” he yelled, nearly choking on water that had gotten into his mouth in the process. John was fighting the current, trying to stay above the water, but he wasn’t sure he could keep it up any longer. His body was becoming numb, due to the freezing temperatures. Oh god, what would he do now.

It was all so fast, though hardly a thing could register in the dog's mind, as she fought against the waves trying to stay up. So many thoughts flashed through her mind, memories, fears...her inevitable death... but it made her wonder... was anyone really watching out for them? The Shepard went still for a moment, before putting forth more effort against the cold waters. She had to try... she had to stay with him they only had each other left. It seemed now as if her emotions pulled at her, weighing her down even more, though she was so determined to stay up, to stay here with John, her concern, and faith had fallen over the edge as she had...
Why did it seem that at this very moment, the waves were heavier, pushing at the two companions harder? That was one among a million questions that circled her mind. She was used to the sea, so close to it, but did today have to be different? Was this karma? Did she do anything wrong to deserve this? But most importantly, how much longer could she stay concious...
"...j-john..."
Dana sputtered, her voice shaken, and barely audible over the waves. Going under the water again, her paws scrambled frantically, though she could feel her energy quickly draining, fading away. With a slight grunt, she finally hit a blank and burst through the surface again, gulping in air, desperately wanting to call out to John, but could no longer find her voice, or the strength...
Things weren't over yet, unfortunately still pushing against the waves, trying to find her companion over the water, despite her blurring vision. After a moment, as she finally spotted him, her eyes widened has they had when she first went under. The Shepard felt a sharp icy pain in her side. Dana let out a piercing yelp, as her body stiffened slightly, and her head went under water again...
[Hehe, I can't blame you, things just got interesting, besides I love making dramatic plots.... ^.^]
