"The fantastic FOXES ON STILTS!"bellowed the round man with the hat. The audience roared with delight, cheering and clapping excitedly. The lid of the cage went up and the dirty-faced men prodded Elaine and her parents hard with a cold, sharp metal bar. The three wolves darted out, into the bright lights and loud sounds, the round-man's whip cracking at their hind paws.
"HA!" shouted the man, cracking the whip behind Elaine. The three wolves formed a line. First, Putin, Elaines father. The tallest of the three wolves. Next, Kya, Elaines mother. The second tallest. Then Elaine, the smallest wolf. The baby.
"HA!" the whip struck Putin's rear and he jumped through the ring, starting the show. The audience cheered.
"HA!" then it struck Kya and she followed Putin through the ring.
Elaine quivered. This wasn't the first time she'd performed this trick but she was terrified of the whip. The terrible grunt that came from the round-man, the screeching sound of the whip and the stinging pain that came as the whip snapped just by her body.
"HA!" came the grunt and the whip crashed down on Elaine's back. She yelped in pain and froze to the spot. Putin and Kya stopped running and looked worriedly at their pup. The round-man frowned. "HA!" he bellowed again, bringing the whip down over her small, quivering body once more, knocking the pup to the ground.
The audience started to boo and the Ringmaster got angrier and angrier. He frowned at the whimpering puppy and kicked her hard up the backside. The audience got angrier and started to throw things into the ring. Putin and Kya ran snarling towards the Round-man, childeren started to cry, women started to scream as Putin sank his teeth into the ringmasters boot and the whole circus descended into chaos. The dirty-faced men ran into the ring with their metal bars and beat the wolves back into their cages, the doors crashing down with a loud slam.
"BANG!"
Elaine awoke sharply with a gasp, struggling to catch her breath. What was that sound!? She scrambled to her feet and nervously glanced all around her dazed and confused. The cool wind caressed her, gently ruffling her already dischevelled fur slightly and the few leaves left clinging to the trees rattled quietly. A jackdaw flew over head, crowing loudly and it startled Elaine.
She looked around at all the familiar trees, patches of grass, piles of leaves and oddly shaped rocks. She listened to the familiar sounds of the nearby sea, the leaves rustling in the tree's and she smelled the scents that hung in the air. The damp ground, the faint saltiness of the seaside and the musty smell of damp tree bark.
Elaine sighed in releif. It had all been a dream, just a flashback, a memory of that day, so long ago. She was in the forest, in her make-shift bed of dried out old branches and leaves. Calmed, Elaine stretched and yawned, her long legs vanishing into deep piles of leaves and her thick black mane standing on end. Her stomach began to rumble and she smelled the saltiness in the air and decided to head down towards the beach. Fish was on the menu!
Shaking herself down, the tall, sleek maned wolf began trotting through the scattered trees and bounded over rocks, her paws crunching through the leaves loudly. Soon, she was within sight of the beach and it's Aumtumnal beauty. She looked at the deep, dark waves glistning in the gentle afternoon sunlight, the sky slowly turning a soft lilac. A smile washed over Elaines long, slim face. The dark waves lapped quietly at the white sand, gulls flew over-head calling their shrill, harsh cry and the wolf was snapped back into reality. It was supper-time and she was hungry.
Eager, she continued towards the beach, kicking leaves in all directions. She felt her front left paw nudge something to one side abd thought nothing of it. Must have been a rock or something. But as she took another step, she stood on it and it sprang up suddenly with a snapping sound and she felt something tighten itself around her leg. She jerked backwards, her hind right leg being pulled violenty and she collapsed to the ground with a shreik of pain as the thick rope dug into her leg.
"What's happening to me!?" Elaine barked, her mind racing. She tried to stand but couldn't. Everytime she treid, a terrible pain shot through her hind quarters and dragged her back down to the ground. She looked round at her leg. There was a thick, thightly woven rope boring into her skin, blood was trickling down over the rope onto the ground. Elaine was caught in a hunters snare just steps away from the beach, hidden behind fallen branches and leaves, hungry in pain and bleeding. She couldn't even reach her leg to lick her wound because her damn legs were too long. She began to cry, memories of her mother falling victim to fur hunters flickering in her mind vividly.
"Help me! Someone please!" she howled, hysterically as she envisaged a similar fate for herself.
Helplessly, she lay there miserable, scared and hoping that this was another bad dream. I refuse to die at the hands of a human...
Not too far away, the seagulls flew over once more, crying out thier shrill call whilst the calm waves glinted in the sunlight. A low mournful howl echoed from somewhere far away and the sun began to sink lower into the lilac sky.
