Alpha Female/Male:
The highest ranks in the pack. As with wolves, the alphas lead the pack as mates, and make most major decisions. The alphas also help to keep the pack safe, and decide who is allowed to join, fight, and breed. They are required to fight for their status if challenged, and put the pack's safety before their own.
Beta Male/Female:
The betas are one rank below the alphas, and provide support for them. They also take part in allowing newcomers to join the pack, patrolling, and taking over if something should happen to one of the alphas. Must fight if challenged for their status.
Omega/pup sitter:
The omega is the lowest rank in the pack before puppies. They watch over the pack's litter and generally act as a babysitter.
Messengers:
Messengers act as the link between the pack and other groups and individuals, carrying messages that need to be sent out. They are required to be fast on their feet and be able to take traveling days at a time with little rest.
Scout:
The scout, or spy, is sent out mainly if there is any activity taking place inside or outside of the pack that needs to be investigated. They risk their lives breaching the borders of opposing packs to gain information, and also patrol and inform the alphas if any non-members cross into the territory.
Pack Socialist:
Not exactly a spy, but still goes out in order to gather information that may be useful for the pack.
Pack Elder:
Retired from a previous rank by choice due to old age, the pack elder(s) plays the role of master storyteller, and is also the one other pack members look to for advice and help with life. May also serve as a pup sitter if the omega is unavailable or needs a break from sitting duties.
Greeters:
These guys help out the alphas by greeting newcomers and accepting them if they come off as trustworthy.
Puppies:
Just as the rank title says, the puppies that live with the pack. They have no responsibilities until they reach 1 year of age.
Members:
Those who make up the majority of the pack, and have various duties such as helping out with hunts, patrolling the borders, etc.
The Tainted:
The name given to those who have, either through actions or words, given reason to be considered a threat to Synl and it's pack members. Tainted individuals are not welcome in the packlands, and will be attacked and/or chased from the territory on sight. Sallin members fall under this category by default unless the alphas have stated otherwise.
As Synl is a dog pack built by rebels and refugees, those who oppose Sallin, are wanted by them, or simply need shelter or rest due to wounds or illness are welcome. Neutrals are welcome as well. If you decide that you would like to try and join a character here, do be aware that they will be seen by Sallin as an enemy...in other words, make sure your character has a reason to join in;). Also, please be aware that if your character is tagged as an enemy and decides to walk through or around Synl borders, they will be confronted and possibly attacked.
Synl is a small circle of land, it's borders created by it's distinguishable trees. These trees are made up of dark trunks and branches, their leaves colored a constant mix of red shades. Of course, these leaves do die and float to the ground, but they are quickly replaced by new, green leaves...however, it only takes a day or so for these new leaves to take on the wine hue as well, and another day before they fall. The forest has been in this state since the Synl dogs claimed it, but the reason for the trees' condition is unknown. The large trees cover most of the sky, save for a few patches that allow a glimpse of the dark clouds above. The ground itself fairly even and covered with old foliage. If one were to dig a bit, they would find dark pebbles scattered on a frozen ground. It is also not uncommon to see human trinkets hidden in holes at the base of trees, brought in by curious pack members after roaming the villages.
Living in Synl is not exactly an easy task for sensitive canines. Weather in the area consists of a lot of rain during the spring, as well as summer, although sunny days are not unheard of during that season. Early fall brings hail and heavy rainfall as well as frost, with light snow during the winter months. Most Synl dogs are used to this frigid climate, but dens and shallow holes in the ground are still a welcome source of shelter from the odd weather.
Ranks aside, all Synl pack members are treated by the alphas as equals. However, this does not mean that members are allowed to slack off; everyone is expected to pull their own weight in order to maintain a united pack. Still, the pack is fairly laid back, and it is not uncommon to see canines participating in puppy games or simply hanging out. Stargazing during clear nights through gaps in tree branches is a known pastime for some as well. Kahvie and Sonny have also organized storytelling circles in which members meet to both listen in and tell fables and tales of everyday life. All in all, the pack just wishes to exist and live freely.
