"War is like a monster on the rampage, it isn't a game...but you understand that."
Umbra looked at Pollux, his expression oddly solemn. "War. War never changes." he said softly, his voice cold and melancholy.
"These pups are playing at something that isn't a game...and they start their families...and they want their battles...tell me Umbra, how well will that go?"
"I have heard nothing from Sallina as of late. However, Nightblood and Albireo prepare for a war that is inevitable. And yet, it is possible to delay. I will not lie to Pollux; I live for war. I live for battle. Yet Arnlan is weak. Will Nightblood's younglings be ready to fight? I doubt it."
He uttered an angry sigh before continuing. "No matter what we may teach them, they will not be forged for the crucible of war. When it comes, it will be swift, and it will bring chaos and ruin. It is Albireo's desire to bring retribution to Sallin, swift and terrible! And yet he knows deep in his heart that Arnlan cannot."
Umbra looked gravely at Pollux. "He fears me. He fears what I can be. I am mad, capricious, and frightfully dangerous. He knows this. I have reason to believe that when war comes, he will throw himself into the fires of battle without regard to his safety."
The ash-gray wolf laughed sardonically, but there was no humour in his voice. "He means to die. A very noble death, I'm sure. Foolish. He and Nightblood are foolish. They can play their little games, but in the end, when the bodies rot and their bones have longed turned to dust, the folly of their ways will be clear. They will throw Arnlan into a war that it is not prepared for. And for what? To strike at its hated enemy?"
"I hope for all our sake that you manage to get some sense into Mortil before we all suffer from his follies..."
Umbra shrugged. "Perhaps, Pollux, if you speak with him some other time...he will listen. Not surprisingly, he chooses to ignore my suggestions."
"Perhaps maybe neither of us are capable of seeing things as they are..."
The warrior shrugged. "Arnlan is blind. If it will take fire and bloodshed to open their eyes...so be it. But for all of your sakes, I hope the Alphas will intervene with their new Beta."
