A cool breeze whistled across the land, through the streets and beyond the doorways. The sounds of daily life in the village filtered through the streets and alleys. Sometimes, children could be heard, their laughter and joy lifting the spirits of all who heard it.
One boy, however, was not enjoying himself. Tom had grown ill once more, and had been confined to the bed again. The boy's coughing was almost painful to hear, especially for Sparky. He sorely wished he could make the boy healthy again, except he could not. Instead he journeyed, trying to find some lost treasure to lift the boy's spirits until he was well again.
Today's adventure was exploring the streets on the far edge of town. Digging through alleyways and running through the fields and trees along the edge of the village, all the while searching, for something that could make his boy happy.

Though the village wasn't always her favorite place to visit, Viernes was no stranger to the cobblestone paths or smoky scent of the human dwelling, of course, she always worried that if and when she wandered to close, she'd get caught again and her fun would be ruined, forced back on the boat with that insolent little prat of a male James.
Of course, she always soothed herself with the notion that HOPEFULLY the male had gone far far away...perhaps over the vast seas or at least the hell away from her.
The real reason she was at the village at all was to get something quick to eat that didn't need to be chased first, and she had gotten it easily, some meat, which she easily snuck to the outside of the village, she was more than half done with it when she saw something dopey come up the path.
Another dog? Not a huge surprise, but they rarely left their homes or the village itself. What was he up to? She leapt up on her feet quickly, in case of a fight or a scuffle, sometimes...well often other canines didn't like to share their turf. She's give him what for if he was looking for trouble that was for sure.

Tom trundled down the path, a small rock held in his mouth. It wasn't much, and it wasn't impressive, but it would do if he didn't find anything better. He smiled lightly at the thought of Tom seeing his gift, and the joy the boy would feel. Tom paused in his reverie when he saw another canine on the path ahead. He walked a bit closer, though he kept his distance somewhat, do to the other dog's stance. He set the stone down on the ground and grinned at the other dog.
"Hello, my friend. How're you this fine day? Out for a quick run? Maybe get a bit of exploring in while you're at it. Or is this less a pleasure cruise and more business like?" He grinned widely and dipped his head slightly, causing his fedora to slide over his eyes a bit in what he hoped was a dashing manner. "Name's Sparky, to who do I owe the pleasure?"
The German Shepard continued grinning, his scarf catching the breeze, causing it to sway dramatically in the wind. He smiled expectantly at Viernes.

The kindly response wasn't at all what the young female thought she would receive, so her tough facade fell somewhat, but still the sight hound carried herself with a sly demeanor. She gracefully footed around the shepard
"I am Viernes." she had a thick accent to her voice, a foreigner obviously, "I was just out to sneak a bit of supper," she gestured a dainty paw at the meat she had been chewing on previously and flashed a toothy smile.
"Why? What brings you out on this day?" She looked him over, her cape catching the same wind that took his scarf on such a wild ride. "You don't often see pets outside of the village you know..." she watched the explorer, she was still a bit leery, but teh male seemed harmless...extremely harmless.

"A pleasure to meet you Viernes." He smiled a wide and honest smile. "Supper, eh? Not bad, not bad. Fine piece of meat you found there." He smiled and made sure not to seem like he was interested in taking said meat from her, and he honestly did not.
"As for why I'm out. Why, Adventure, of course!" He grinned widely and struck a heroic pose. "Poor Tom is bed ridden today, so I have gone on a heroic solo mission to bring back a mystical artifact." He deflated somewhat. "Unfortunately I have only found this," he motioned towards the stone with his muzzle. "A simple Shimmering Stone, barely any worth to it at all. There are hundreds of these in museums across the world. Magical, yes. Nothing special though." He struck another pose. "That is why I must continue my mission!"
He looked over at Viernes, a dashing smile on his face. "Would my fair lady have any ideas where something rare and valuable may reside?"

Viernes looked at the rock, it was just a plain, granite creekrock, there was nothing shimmering or pretty about the thing, just a moldy old rock, she almost felt bad for Sparky, trying push such grandeur on such a thing, obviously the male was desperate to bring his human back a something nice.
"Well...have you looked around? He's what...a little boy? " She hmmed about what to find a small child for an interesting item. She really wasn't into the business of being a pet or keeping a human happy, but she'd help...what the heck did she have to do better? "Maybe you can find him some bones in the woods there." she shrugged and nudged her head towards the folliage along the village
"I'm sure he'd love something like that."

"Bones, eh? Excellent idea, my lady!" He turned and eyed the woods nearby. "No doubt a long forgotten civilization awaits in the foliage of yonder woods, just waiting to be discovered." He began joyfully running towards the woods, a wide grin on his face. He got a short distance away before turning to look at Viernes again. "Would you like to join me, Viernes? This adventure could be dangerous and I could use someone who could watch my back. In case the natives attack, or the ruins are booby-trapped."
He grinned widely, once again shaking his fedora down over his eyes again. Striking his heroic pose again, he beckoned to the other canine to adventure with him.

Well this was just...odd. What sort of dog just gallivanted around thinking that they were some sort of Historian...she paused, and shook her head. Viernes knew she did...once, many months ago. When she lived on an explorers sailing ship. But that was completely different, this guy probably never leaved this Village, let alone seen Babylon.
This was curious.
"Well of course, I myself am well educated in the foreign cultures abroad." Viernes put a confident and steady paw forward, perhaps stroking her ego as much as playing along. "I shall be an asset to your survival I wager."

"Most definitely. Any expedition needs a specialist. I fancy myself to be a well-rounded and educated man, but much of my knowledge comes from what I have been taught, both by my teachers and the world at large." He grinned widely. "I have not, however, chosen a specialty as yet. An excellent asset, indeed."
With that, he trotted off towards the woods once more, an excited look in his eye. He shook his head and the fedora rose slightly, out of his eyes. His scarf blew behind him like a wild second tail. He laughed slightly and would leap into the air every so often. When he reached the tree line, he paused waiting for Viernes.
"Are you ready?" He grinned.

Man? A well educated man? What sort of mixed up pup was this? She smirked, flashing a toothy smile at the odd dog. "Well specialization is not a trait that many try for..sadly enough." she cooed on, still rather amused by this little game, for now.
She did not respond to whether or not she was ready, instead she charged on ahead of Sparky brashly, she seemed to not be scared about the unknown. Viernes gestured her head towards the path and rushed on.

"Aha! Enthusiasm! An admirable trait in anyone, rare among most." He laughed happily. "I like your gumption! Yes, onward. Onward to adventure." Sparky charged forward into the woods, following Viernes closely.
As he grew nearer to the female he struck up their previous conversation. "Indeed it is unfortunate that in this glorious age, so few have a true passion or understanding of Science." The capital 's' could almost be heard in the way he spoke. "Soon, I myself shall choose a focus and join the ranks of acadamia, with the aid of my companion, of course. Truely unfortunate that he was unable to join in this expedition."
Sparky's head drooped for a moment, then rose again in pride. "No matter. Simply means that I must pick up the slack, with the aid of my new traveling companion, of course." He looked over at Viernes with a wide grin.

"I've been told I have...something like gumption to spare." Viernes chuckled, the female did enjoy the compliments, even considering the source. "I find that most are afraid of getting their paws dirty, its easier to just sit inside." the elegant looking hound poked a paw at some rubble in front of her, hardly finding anything of interest. She looked over at Sparky and smiled, shrugging.
"So you aren't typically out alone?" she replied as he mentioned the idea of a companion, it threw her for a loop, was that a mate or a human or a dog companion. Very interesting...that would mean that at the least there would be one more madly adventurous sort. "So science...what sort of Science are you going to find out here? Just anthropological finds? Or what?"
Even though she was just playing along, Viernes had a keen understanding of the game that Sparky played. She nodded her head politely as they walked, it probably meant a lot to him...

Sparky chuckled merrily. "Indeed, many do not realize that adventure and discovery can only come with experience. Hiding indoors may be easy, but nothing is gained. Wonderful to know that another understands this." He smiled appreciatively at Viernes.
He climbed atop a small pile of rocks and looked around, fedora cocked back to widen his field of vision. "Indeed not madam. I often travel with an energetic, if..." He paused, as if thinking. "Unhealthy, young lad." He smiles widely. "Young Tom is a wonderful child. Intelligent beyond his years, and eager to explore the world. Cruel that fate has decided to cripple him so." He lowered his head sadly, then raised it again in pride. "In lieu of his presence, I shall bring home something for his young mind to study and learn from."
He returned to searching around the woods from his vantage point. His grin widened significantly. "I hope to find something of import, preferably on the global scales, which broadens the horizons of all sentient beings on this blue planetoid. Barring that, a piece of local history could suffice. And, I think I may have found it." He gestured with his nose to the north. "Over there! A ruined temple of some sort, indeed. Or possibly an abandoned dwelling of a lost civilization."
Behind a slight hill, hidden behind a thick tree line, the charred remains of an old house could be seen. Much of its ground level lay in ruins, revealing entrance to it's foundations.

Viernes poked around, she didn't seem to follow Sparky, though she did understand the seriousness of his statements. She couldn't help but feel bad for his poor little boy. She had never been really owned, in that sort of sense, she had never bonded to a human, but from what she knew, they were very important bonds to most dogs.
"I'm sorry he is not feeling well." She said slowly, making sure to prove her sincerity. But that shepard had the attention span of a gnat soon the male was pointing to something even she hadn't noticed before.
An old house? She was hoping she was seeing it, or else crazypaws was starting to rub off on her. "Well there is a good place to start. Eh?"

Sparky nodded in agreement with Viernes. "Indeed, it is unfortunate. He shall be fine, though. He always is after a day or so of rest." He grinned widely, almost seeming to boast about the boy's recovery speed.
He leapt down from atop the pile of rocks. "Excellent. You are correct, it would be an ideal place to search. Perhaps we would find an ancient relic of some sort, maybe even evidence of some lost and forgotten civiliazation, no doubt." He began to run toward the ruined home. "Come, my friend. Let us unearth its secrets!"
