Ooc; I’m sorry this took sssooo long, but with school starting and stuff, everything’s been real hectic… And sorry it's so shitty... kinda got distracted...
ic;; Sallin, pack of nightmares and horror… was relatively quiet… and it had been that way for a while, now. The only thing that seemed to live in the packlands as the day slowly gave way to night was the wind, icy and somehow haunting. It stirred the otherwise still land. The fierce gale’s main target was the trees. Ripping at the leaves and bending limbs, it caused an eerie commotion. Apart from the rustling of the leaves and the groaning of the branches, it tugged at the fur of anyone who happened to be at it’s mercy
Even in the presence of their queen, the pack was still dying. Even she could not undo the damage caused by the lack of proper leadership. At first, members just began leaving and by Sallin law, they were to be hunted down. After a while though, there weren’t enough members left to hunt down the escapees, so everyone just stopped giving a damn… Hallowed included.
He had never really cared much for the pack though. It had always been a place to stay and do basically nothing. The wolf lacked almost any ambition and status in Sallin (what fun was having a high rank when no one was around), so most of his time was spent harassing slaves and other members. At the moment, it was his primary objective it piss as many members off as possible. Not because he enjoyed it or had a death wish, but simply because it was something to do. The fact that he hadn’t seen any members since his chat with “Jack the Ripper” (or Cohen, as others called him) and Damien, made it difficult to achieve this objective.
Instead, the dusty-colored canine had to stick to ambling through Sallin’s lands. Not the most exciting activity, but an off feeling of agitation had plagued him, making any attempt at solitude completely impossible. Somehow, he had ended up at the Bone Yard. It obviously wasn’t the best smelling area of the packlands, but there wasn’t much else to do…

Truth be told Sallin was empty, all wolves disappeared in her absence, taking advantage of one thing and thing thing only, no one capable to take charge. even so, the same question kept bothering her over and over again, what was Carter doing. She was displeased with the thought that her son, the heir of Sallin would let her land fall like this. This angered her and it was no laughing matter when the Queen of Sallin was angry.
Her ears twitched as the tiniest, slightest of sounds came to her ears. Someone was near. Her nose wrinkled as she thought carefully. They needed a warden, she had been searching for that wolf, Hallowed, he would be a fine warden and just what Sallin needed. Also she needed someone to keep a keen eye on the slaves, something fishy going on with the slaves. She needed to keep a keen eye on Damien, every nerve twitched when she heard him speak, he was intelligent a great liar, a trickster.
She lifted her head and gave a snort. With a flick of her tail she walked lazily to where she had thought the sound had come. A playful smile caressed itself on her lips, Hallowed. The dust colored wolf would be an excellent Warden, but she needed someone with a head and the disposition to keep the slaves in line and that's just what she would do.
-"Hallowed" she said softly "Just the wolf I was looking for" she said with a toothy grin.
She stopped to look carefully at the dust coated wolf. The Sallin Bone yard, what was he doing here. She looked carefully at the bones and dust, where was that priest? He wasn't anywhere in sight and she had thought that his work was at the Bone yard. She snorted, he would be forgiven, because Right now it was for the best. She needed to talk with Hallowed alone, not in mixed company. She looked around carefully at the dry earth again, than turned to Hallowed again.
-"As I was saying, I was looking for you." she said with a grin, her eyes narrowed.

"Hallowed. Just the wolf I was looking for"
The queen’s volume, combined with the racket caused by the wind and Hallow’s inattention, were the reasons that the wolf went right on walking, despite the fact that Nightshade had addressed him. Instead of showing some sign of respect or atleast acknowledging the Queen’s presence, he dug through a pile of bones, probably heaped together by the ‘priest’. Leaving the first pile, he went to another. More rummaging through remains. Nothing seemed to interest him in that stack, so he moved on.
"As I was saying, I was looking for you."
He froze when he heard those words. Strangely ominous. This could be a good thing, or a horrible, horrible thing. On one hand, she might need him to do something for her. Not exactly good, but not bad either. On the other, all those times of referring to Nightshade as the ‘old hag’ behind her back might have caught up to him. Shit. Both of these possibilities crossed his mind, in mere seconds. At that moment, he had his head shoved into a heap of bones. Clutched between his jaws was a bone. After that train of thought had entered and run through his mind, he jerked his head out of the pile. This caused the stack to collapse, scattering dusty remains of Sallinians across the ground.
Grey eyes wide with something between fear and surprise, Hallow released the bone that he had. It clattered to the ground. The noise made him flinch, but also seemed to startle him into action. Ears drawn back, he bowed before “the Old Hag”, eyes searching the dried and cracked ground for some answer as to what was about to take place. An execution? She was grinning. Not a good sign. But there was no one with her. A good sign. If she was going to kill him right then and there, there would most likely be an audience. He would be an example for them. The queen showing her subjects that she was still in power…
“Mistress NightShade,” was the only thing he had the presence of mind to say.

Nightshade's yellow eyes darted from left to right as her impatience grew. The pathetic excuse for a flea bitten wolf was simply digging around the bones and ruining the Priest's hard work. This creature was vile and irresponsible, just what she needed to watch over the slaves, hopefully, he would have half a brain and would be able to prevent any of them escaping. But why would a slave risk its life trying to get past this brute? The idea seemed stupid and silly, even dangerous.
He would do until someone more competent could watch over the slaves and this soon to be Warden.
That was if he got his furry ass where she was. She growled, her frustration taking the best of her.
-“Mistress NightShade,”
Nightshade bared her fangs and a snarl came from within her throat. She would show this wolf some respect before he took the rank, that was for sure.
-"Show more respect for your Queen or I will have you head on a tree!!" she growled.
She waited a long time taking good watch of his reaction, waiting for the wolf to either show her that he was capable of taking the rank, or if he deserved a few scars for his air head-ness.

"Show more respect for your Queen or I will have you head on a tree!!"
That statement left Hal slightly confused. His head… on a tree? How was that supposed to be done? Cohen had a knack for placing innards and limbs on trees so maybe she would have him do it… He’d certainly enjoy it, the bastard. Shit. That didn’t matter at the moment. He groped for an answer to give her. He’d have to have a damn good reason for not showing respect to Sallin’s tyrant-bitch of a queen.
“I’m sorry, Queen Nightshade; you surprised me. I thought you were the priest…”
Hallow lied, head still bowed, eyes searching the ground for answers (and also not daring to look her in the eye). She definitely wasn’t here to kill him… so what in the hell did she want? Still thinking, he took a seat, the scars spelling out ‘LIAR’ on his leg temporarily warped, on the cold, hard ground. Sitting there, he felt her cruel eyes practically bore into him, so he raised his head up. She hadn’t killed him on sight, and now she was judging him. So, either she thought he was a rat (rumors of which had been going around in Sallin) or she was judging him for some other not-as-evil purpose. Refusing to look at her made him look guilty and like a coward. It would be a dead giveaway if she didn't suspect him of something. With that thought, he sat up straight at looked straight at her instead of at the ground. Hallowed now look like a solider at attention, rather than a dog cowering before a cruel master...

-“I’m sorry, Queen Nightshade; you surprised me. I thought you were the priest…”
Her eyes widened in shock and Nightshade could not hold back the snarls that erupted from her muzzle. Her eyes bore into his skull as Hallowed looked at the ground. Maybe Cohen would like torturing the flea bitten creature before her now. He seemed to be thinking, forgetting again whose presence was before him...so she snarled again. His head snapped up and he met her gaze, a glare.
He would defiantly be replaced when someone more competent appeared. Maybe he would be useful as an Omega, this thought pleased her, but she shook it away before it changed the course of her true reasons to be standing here. She took a deep breath to calm herself, though it did little, maybe even enrage her more.
-"Why would you even suggest such a thing?!" she barked holding a growl "Lucky you find yourself while he's not here, the mess you left..." she snorted before her temper took the best of her again. "But I didn't come here to teach you some manners, though that will be soon taken care of" she assured him, his insolence would not go unpunished, he was lucky she had not taken a swipe at the mutt "soon enough hopefully" she growled and glared some more at Hallowed, his reaction would determine her next words.

"Why would you even suggest such a thing?! Lucky you find yourself-- blahblahblah…”
As Nightshade went off on a tirade, her lowly subject stared blankly into space. The wolf’s features were utterly wiped clean of all emotion, that would betray the fact that this conversation (and Nightshade) were completely boring him. So, instead of giving her another reason to punish him, he simply gave her an intelligent stare. His mind wandered off to other things in the perhaps minute and a half that she ranted away. It was only after he had growled at him that he realized that this was a two-way conversation and it was his turn to reply.
“I apologize, my Lady. I will do better in the future.”
Of all the adjectives that could be used to describe Hallowed, stupid wasn’t one of them. Lazy, prick, and disrespectful were, yet he still bowed his head (again), this time in a more respectful manner. Even he was aware of the fact that he was dangerously close to an ass-kicking and masochist wasn’t on that list of adjectives that could be applied to Hallow. Greedy was however, and he eyes the bone at his feet whilst be bowed. He’d have to be sure to take that when she left… if he even made it through this conversation without ending up an corpse, that was…

-“I apologize, my Lady. I will do better in the future.”
Nightshade hissed a growl, but straightened and flciked her tail. Hallowed had...his uses, she needed him alive, but as soon as possible he would be replaced, she had other "promotions" to make. She forced a tiny smile, wich, amazingly took a lot of work to keep there.
-"Hallowed" she srated gently, though her voice started getting more and more harsher by the second (or by the syllable) "I've observed carefully your relaitionship with the slaves..." she stared at him, hoping for anything rude to come next, or hoping she got his attention "and I must say it is quite pleasing." she almost barked the last word, but kept the tiny smile, which still took effort to keep considering she was speaking through her grited teeth "And I was thinking that this...relaitionship may have its advantages." she took a deep breath, before her temper snapped and waited for the "wolf" to say something.

Hallowed was really pissing the old hag off, as she had growled at him again. That thought seemed to just pass him by, as did the consequences. He did take note of her reactions, but made no effort to try to improve her mood or opinion of him. He noticed that smile. That damn fake smile that he believed to resemble something like a grimace. The twisted expression did little to allay his suspicion. Nightshade didn’t smile. Not like this. If she did ever smile, it was usually when something cruel was going on and it happened to please her…
"Hallowed,"
His head snapped up, curious and yet wary…
"I've observed carefully your relationship with the slaves...”
Aw, shit. He was going to die, right here, right now. The psycho queen thought he was the rat… He would kill that bastard, Damian… if Nightshade didn’t kill him first… It was almost involuntary, but Hal’s mouth grew dry and he felt all of his muscles tighten. If she made any move towards him, he’d haul ass right outta there.
"and I must say it is quite pleasing. And I was thinking that this...relationship may have its advantages.”
“Advantages?” He did a poor job of masking the suspicion in his voice.

-“Advantages?"
Nightshade raised an eyebrow and for a moment considered slashing the wolf, but held her place by standing very rigid and locking her muscles in place. She took a deep breath, remeber that this idiot is the one who will keep the slaves in line, she kept reminding herself, don't forget that. She tried her best you-are-an-idiot-so-I'll-explain-this-slowly smile.
She dug her claws on the ground. Just keep yourself in place.
-"I have observed that you have a "close" relaitionship with the slaves, you like to torture them, correct?" she said quickly so to not loose her temper.
She waited a few seconds reminding herself to think of this buffon as the idiot who would help her instead of a good target.
She clicked her tongue.
-"I was thinking that someone like you might want a promotion of sorts" she said letting the sentence linger for a while, adding to the pressure the wolf must already be feeling "Perhaps someone like you would be interested in the rank of Warden?"

The queen was talking to him like he was a complete and total idiot. Though that did not please him, the fact that she was annoyed and anger about having to treat the subordinate as if he was child, did. He watched her tense and her smile/grimace warp into something else. Hallowed smiled back at her. A normal smile. His smile didn’t mask any rage or irritation. It hid who much he was enjoying this and how damn pleased he was that the Queen hadn’t killed him yet, and how much she seemed to be putting herself through for him, some insignificant mutt.
"I have observed that you have a "close" relationship with the slaves, you like to torture them, correct?"
“No more than anyone else, m’lady,” was his reply.
-"I was thinking that someone like you might want a promotion of sorts."
Promotion… what the hell? What had he done to deserve a promotion. He’d actually never done much for the pack at all. Hal hadn’t tried to stop the other members from leaving Sallin. In fact, he’d thought about leaving the pack throughout most of the Queen’s absence. Had almost done it too, but he was here now and the conditions were suitable: he had no actual duties and no one bothered him about it. What could be better than that?
"Perhaps someone like you would be interested in the rank of Warden?"
He was interested now… and not solely because he wanted the job. He’d never been an ambitious creature and his real power was over the slaves, not the other members of the pack. What interested him was the fact that Nightshade was offering it to him …
What would be the duties of Warden… for ‘someone like me’?

Nightshade was extremely pleased that the idiot had at last reacted, showing interest, oh so that had caught his ear, she though with a bit of annoyement. She waited till that sunk in, he seemed to realize that there was something important if she was offering the rank personally, she grinned in anticipation and annoyance. Of course she was offering it herself there was no one competent enough to do that simple task, well there was Cohen, but with the wolf the risk that those he had a "chat" with him turned out injured where great...though right now she wouldn't mind if he dropped by and showed this beast a bit of respect...
-"What would be the duties of Warden… for ‘someone like me’?"
Her grin was wicked and looked misplace along with the mischief on her cat-like eyes.
-"Wardens" she said with deliberately, smiling "watch the slaves, spy on them for the sake of the Queen, makes sure they are kept in line." she said watching carefully his reaction "They may entertain themselves with the slaves, torture to them or who-knows-what-else" she said with a crooked grin "Basically spend "quality time" with the little runts, you would simply have to make sure they are all in line and follow orders like the worthless rats they are, you can do with them whatever your wish, it is not my business." she said while looking down at her claws, clicking them against the dried earth.
She sat down, curled her tail over her paws, looking content, awaiting what would Hallowed say next, or his reaction. She thought unlikely that he would refuse, because if he did, he would get another promotion, Omega. She would like to see the idiot take a beating, the rank of omega suited him. She couldn't help the smile as she imagined the idiot as beaten down as the rest of the slaves, her tail flicking playfully from side to side.
Yes that would be a good rank for him indeed.

The old hag was grinning again. At first it displayed some small sliver of hope. That he really wasn’t as big an idiot as he seemed to be… It was warped into something evil, that Hal thought did quite fit with the roguish look in her eyes.
"Wardens watch the slaves, spy on them for the sake of the Queen, makes sure they are kept in line. They may entertain themselves with the slaves, torture to them or who-knows-what-else. Basically spend "quality time" with the little runts, you would simply have to make sure they are all in line and follow orders like the worthless rats they are, you can do with them whatever your wish, it is not my business."
The click of her claws against the hard-packed ground had a sense of finality to it, as if that was the end of everything and he had to make a decision. All through her little speech her smile shifted and changed, putting the mutt of a bit. It was fake, throughout most of it. Or at least he thought so. Nightshade just stood there, a pleased look on her features and then she smiled. He sensed that this time it was a real grin, not just part of the act. A contemplative frown crossed his features… because of the offer. Not because he really wanted it─playing babysitter for a group of worthless mutts didn’t seem like an ideal position─but because he unsure of what refusing it meant for him. He wasn’t scared but he didn’t want to become a slave himself or end up a corpse.
She would kill me, sure as hell.
That thought was clear. He had shown her absolutely no respect since she had approached him and he was sure he’d pay for that one day. Maybe not now, but in the future… he’d probably turn around one day to find Cohen standing there… waiting…Anger flared at the thought, but the wolf managed to control it and keep himself from doing something he’d regret..
“I’m sure someone like me would be interested in the rank of Warden.” A forced smile accompanied his acceptance of the offer. Hallow refused to come right out and say that he would take the job. It was a minute act of defiance, the only one he could get away with at the moment, given the queen’s presence…

Hallowed did his share of thinking, which added to her impatience as her claws clicked on the ground again, this time not showing any emotion she simply kept watching his reaction. Well, he sure as hell did take his time and even when he seemed resolved he paused as if to think things through....again. It had been just seconds but she wasn't in the mood for waiting and it displeased her that this mutt would be the one to taste her patience, maybe a scar on the face, her claws marked forever as a reminder that Nightshade was NOT patient. He was just standing there, she all but, had simply to raise her paw and slash the mutt's face...
-“I’m sure someone like me would be interested in the rank of Warden.”
She raised an eyebrow, thinking about slashing his face still. What did he want for her to throw confetti and brake down in a touchdown dance...unlikely. She snorted as she imagined Hallowed walking forever with her claws marked on his cheek, pleasant idea....but still...
-"If the rank doesn't please you I have another one that will." she said in a tender, inviting voice. Oh yeah, she did have a rank that would suit him, she figured he would get the threat under her "kind" offering.
Her tail flicked playfully and she grinned in anticipation, what would he answer? After her show she doubted he would deny her little request, maybe he would be all to willing to accept the rank of Warden...if not...she figured Omega would suit him.

Somehow, Hal had managed to piss her off again. This time by thinking too long. Which was ironic, considering that last time he had angered her by not thinking. At this point, he was no longer pleased by the outcome of the situation. One: because this conversation was actually starting to bore him quite a bit. And two: because he knew who close to the edge he was. Sooner or later she’d snap and maybe rip his throat out or have him dismembered. Cohen… that stupid, crazy bastard…
"If the rank doesn't please you I have another one that will."
Now he was dangerously close to losing his life or a limb or two. If he didn’t come up with something to appease her, Hal feared he wouldn’t live to see tomorrow… He did his best to control his voice and stow away the anger. There was only a hint of it in his eyes, but it was quickly disappeared by the wolf.
“Warden suits me fine. I am honored that you considered me for the position. I will do my best, Lady Nightshade.” He was perfectly composed, at least on the outside. Inside, he’d wanted to slash the old hag’s throat. If it would have done any good, he surely would go on with it. But, either way, attempting to it would do little to improve his life. If he tried to and didn’t, he would be dead. Simple as that. If Hal did kill the bitch, Kaine or Carter or someone would hunt him down at kill him… either way the outcome was the same.
