Crow quickly regained her senses, straightening herself up. She flashed Pollux a toothy, though still a little unconfident, grin. It was a more enthusiastic nod she got this time. As the other turned to leave, the newly re-appointed Sentry turned back to her fearless leader, who seconded the Scout’s mock-scolding. Crow returned Sofika’s kindly smile. Yeah, that’s what she needed to do… rest up, eat her fill. She’d recover quickly enough, then, and make up for lost time.
Yes… to the food store it was. The journey up and the emotional rollercoaster involved in her return had certainly taken it’s toll. Her body ached, and she felt as though she were a water-starved plant wilting in the sun. She simply felt so… old. It wasn’t right, she still had many years ahead of her. She was in the peak of her life! To be feeling like this – sure, she was far from being a pup, but… Ziko! How was he? He would be on the verge of puppydom and adulthood, the awkward gangly stage. Crow noticed the enquiring look that the Alphess’ face held, and it was matched on her own. Just as Sofika wished to question Crow about the happenings of the past few months, she wished the same. What had happened in her absence? How many newcomers had past into the lands, who gained rank, who else (as Pollux had mentioned) had disappeared… But this was not the time, her weary body reminded her – surely the time for this catch-up would be better later, at a more coherent time. The wind whipped through her thin fur, and Crow couldn’t help but think of the sheltered spot that the food store had seemingly forever been.
The wing-marked female folded back her ears and dipped her head to the rich-black one in great respect, thanks and appreciation. Here she would take her leave momentarily.
She gave the shadowy figure a last look – her eyes glistened over in sincere thankfulness, speaking of all the emotions of relief and happiness and everything else that ran through the body to which the belonged.
